If you are used to the medical model where TSH is pretty much the exclusive marker to determine thyroid treatment you’ll be relieved to know that we look MUCH deeper into your thyroid metabolism. The medical model that relies upon medications to replace T4 or T3 hormone was developed in the 1950?s. The good news is that there has been a lot of research in the last 10 years that uncovers the mechanisms that cause thyroid symptoms even when your TSH is normal.
We recognize that your thyroid metabolism exists within a web of chemical interactions.
What makes us different is that we’re using peer-reviewed medical research to comprehensively evaluate all the factors that are causing your thyroid problem. This is known as Functional Medicine. We don’t simply label a patient with a diagnosis and then ignore the patient and only treat the condition. This approach makes us virtually unique in New York City.
The comprehensive programs we offer are designed to do 3 things:
1. Let you know exactly why you feel the way you do. Everyone is different – even with the same condition. We perform testing to find out about you, you’re unique. Your problems may be caused by a set of problems completely different from your malady. For example, one thyroid/diabetes/overweight patient may have a food sensitivity causing metabolic disturbance, for another it’s a bacteria/parasite or fungus and for another it’s abnormal hormone levels and for the very complicated case it’s all three.
2. Once the recommended testing is performed (we don’t run the same tests on every patient, this is not a cookie-cutter approach) and we know what the problem is, we can begin the process of treating what we find. The largest biochemical influence upon our body from the outside world is from our diet. Therefore, we can change a patient’s diet and provide synergistic nutritional supplementation and expect significant changes in biochemistry. Improvement in physiologic function will be readily experienced by the patient ( as in, ” Hey, I feel better.) and seen on the objective tests.
3. Continued testing and appropriate treatment ultimately result in improved health and a patient learning how to manage their health. Ultimately, our program empowers you patients to learn what they need to eat, drink, do – how to live – so you can thrive in your personal energy, at your job, with your family and friends. So you can be the person that your condition has stolen from you.
To achieve these three goals our programs include any and all of the following:
Determination of necessary testing. Some of the testing includes
Blood Test Nutritional Analysis
Comprehensive Blood Chemistry
Complete Thyroid Panel
CBC with Auto-differential
Lipid Panel
Food Sensitivity Testing (for Gluten, Soy, Dairy, Yeast & Eggs)
Intestinal Permeability (to test for “Leaky Gut Syndrome”)
Microbial Testing (presence of pathogenic bacteria, opportunistic bacteria, yeast, fungus, protozoa & Parasites)
Immune System Testing
Cytokine Panels (to determine Th1 or Th 2 dominance)
Lymphocyte subpopulation panel (to determine the nature of the abnormal immune reaction)
Urea Breath Test (to determine the presence of H. Pylori)
Hormone Panels (estrodiol, estriol, estrone, testosterone, DHEA, FSH, LH, progesterone, cortisol, Dihydotestosterone, SIgA,)
Metabolic Testing Including:
Vitamin and mineral insufficiencies
Amino acid insufficiencies like carnitine and N-acetyl cysteine (NAC)
Oxidative damage and antioxidant sufficiency markers
Indicators to assess detoxification sufficiency
The best functional markers of B-complex deficiency
Neurotransmitter metabolites to assess central nervous system (CNS) function
Mitochondrial energy production assessment via citric acid cycle components
Methylation sufficiency status
Lipoic acid and CoQ10 sufficiency markers
Specific dysbiosis markers for bacterial and yeast overgrowth
Consultation with patient to discuss testing pros and cons, prioritization and diagnostic plan of action.
Medically Assisted Cleanse – many chronic diseases disrupt normal bowel and liver detoxification pathways. During the medically assisted cleanse we will remove certain foods, recommend supplementary nutritional products, help the patient with menu suggestions, recipes, tasty/nutritious food substitution, improve eating habits including snacking, eating at restaurants, food diary review and assessing results at the end of the cleanse.
Review of results of all testing. Each patient is metabolically different. The testing affords us a glimpse into what is disrupting your healthy metabolism. Once we have revealed the breakdowns in the web of your biochemistry we will consult with you on an ongoing basis to repair the insults to your metabolism. Ongoing services include
Determination of type and frequency of follow-up testing
Ongoing lab test analysis
Nutritional supplementation recommendations to improve the factors disturbing normal physiologic function
Food coaching
One on one nutritional counseling
24/7 Email support with doctor
Food diary analysis
Food Coaching Classes
In short, if we don’t do the testing we’ll never know. If we don’t support you consistently to learn how to successfully live with your condition all is lost. We are committed to changing your life.
